Nakwakto Gooseneck Barnacles 1 - Click here for more information about this image
These Nakwakto Gooseneck Barnacles (Pollicipes polymerus) were shot on May 26, 2007 at a depth of 35 feet along Turret Rock which is located in the centre of the famous Nakwakto Rapids near Port Hardy, British Columbia.

Few divers have had the privilege to see these Gooseneck Barnacles. This is not because they are hard to locate, but rather because they are located in the centre of the Nakwakto Rapids which is reported in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the fastest navigable waters in the world. Maximum ebb currents run at 16-20 knots and maximum flood currents run at 14 knots with the time in between counted in minutes.   This is black diamond diving and it’s worth it!

The Gooseneck Barnacles were first discovered in the Nakwakto Rapids in the 1970’s. This discovery baffled biologists. After all, these barnacles were not supposed to be here. They are supposed to be the exclusive residents of inter-tidal zones in heavy surf regions. The tell-tale red on these barnacles is purported to occur because of the hemoglobin in the blood.

Welcome to the Scott Cormack Photography website.  The images on this site are organized into five galleries to better group my photographic interests by subject matter.  With my primary interest being underwater photography, the Underwater Gallery contains my largest collection of images, most of which were taken in the Pacific Northwest.  As I process more images for this site, I'll include travelogs and add additional images from other scuba diving locations around the world.

The Artist's Gallery contains a collection of images that explore various subjects with more artistic intervention.  I look forward to expanding this section in the coming months.

The Flowers, Landscape and Wildlife Galleries are all fairly self-explanatory.

I hope you enjoy my images and hope you revisit the site to review the ever-changing collection you will find here.  Should you wish to purchase prints or use any of the images contained on this site for web or other advertising purposes, please go to the Place Order page or visit the Contact page and contact me directly.  I would also appreciate any feedback you may have.  There's an email link on each page - just click on the link and send me a comment or two.
